The Hidden Danger of House Bill 1959

This bill is not about helping patients. It is about limiting your choices and making it harder to get the medications you need at a price you can afford.

If passed, HB1959/SB 2040 would shut down hundreds of pharmacies statewide. These closures would hit rural communities the hardest, where families already travel long distances just to pick up their medications.

The bill would take away mail-order pharmacy options that more than 122,000 Tennessee veterans and their families rely on. Seniors with limited mobility would lose home delivery services. Working parents would lose the convenience of having prescriptions shipped directly to their door. Patients managing serious conditions like cancer would see their specialty pharmacy options disappear.

Prescription drug costs would jump by $744 million in just the first year. When you eliminate pharmacies, you eliminate competition. When you eliminate competition, prices go up for everyone.

The consequences go beyond cost and convenience. Research shows that when pharmacies close, 1 in 6 patients stop taking their medications entirely. Tennessee would see an estimated 880 additional hospitalizations every year as a direct result of this legislation.
